November  2004: A bendable foldable loudspeaker made from woven copper wiring and polyester is now available from Osaka-based semiconductor firm Mikasa Shoji. The speaker size dictates the price. Currently, a 5.5x30 cm speaker costs about 15,000 yen, but the company aims at reducing the price for next year. More>>

November  2004: Yarns made solely from carbon nanotubes could pave the way for the next generation of 'soft' body armours to provide protection from bullets and other small ballistic missiles. The dry-spun carbon nanotubes yarns, developed by the University of Texas and CSIRO, could also be used to produce garments that act as electrically-driven 'muscles'. More>>

October 2004: Novel optoelectronic fibres containing metal, insulator and seminconducting layers have been created at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Potential applications include spectrometric fabrics for photodetectors and light sensitive materials for clothing. More>>

October 2004: The University of Bath and the London College of Fashion are collaborating in the development of an intelligent garment that adapt to changing temperatures by opening and closing tiny spike-like structures on the surface of the material.  The micro structure is said to mimic pine cones when they open and close to emit seeds. More>>

September  2004: Xybernaut Corp has patented a wearable computer system integrated within the collar of a garment.  The system consists of computer components such as a display monitor, microphone, audio headset, hands-free components, etc. More>>

September  2004: Scottevest Inc (SeV) and Global Solar Energy have launched the first solar-powered jacket, able to carry, connect and charge portable devices. The jackets, which retails at $425 each, contains the patent-pending Personal Area Network (PAN) and a series of internal, hidden conduits. More>>

August 2004: The first cellulose-made shape memory fabrics have been produced at Hong-Kong Polytechnic University. The shape memory effect is imparted by a polymer finish on the natural fibre fabrics, enabling them to return to their original shape when heated. More>>

August 2004: Global market for smart fabrics and intelligent textiles is currently estimated at $300 million today, and expected to grow to $720 million by 2008. The military represent ~10% of annual consumption. Fashion clothing and accessories also take up a large market. More>>

August 2004: 'Outlast fibres and fabrics' are to be used in a new range of sweaters by Bernette Textiles (US), to produce garments that can adjust to keep the wearer at an optimum temperature. The sweaters will be able to store, absorb and release heat as required, through micro-encapsulated phase change materials. More>>

August 2004: US Congress approves $21m funding for Polartec Fabrics to develop garments for the US military. $1.5million of this amount is set aside for research into electronic textiles used to monitor and transmit soldiers' pulse, blood pressure, temperature and location. More>>

July 2004: Rosner and Infineon develop 128Mb MP3 jacket with incorporated headphones, where the electronic device is controlled through buttons on the jacket's sleeve. The jacket will be available from the Rosner website from August 2004. More>>

July 2004: Northumbria University (UK) comes up with wireless football shirt that can measure dehydration level.  The washable shirt uses sensors to record electrical activity of the heart and silicon gel based strips to monitor sweat loss.  More>>

July 2004: Fabrics that generate solar power could soon be woven into military uniforms and other materials. The fabrics, made by Iowa Thin Film Technologies Inc. have a silicon film embedded with solar modules.  More>>

June 2004: Launch of a student competition for the most innovative smart clothing concept. The deadline for the competition is the 15th September 2004, with a cash prize of £300. More>>

June 2004: Heated socks now on trials - tests for wireless 'smart' wool socks, made with conductive polymers threaded through ordinary wool to provide warmth, are under way with British retailers.  More>>

June 2004: Cell-phone users can now protect themselves against mobile phone radiation by wearing smart trousers developed by Crocodile Products Private Ltd (India). The trousers pockets are lined with 'Radiguard', a woven mix of cotton, polyester and steel capable of filtering out the electro magnetic rays from mobile phones. The trousers are likely to be available on the market in July 2004.  More>>

May 2004: "1", the latest Adidas running shoe, incorporates sensors, a microprocessor and motor to adjust cushioning during walking and running.  The new shoe has been under development for the last three years, and is said to be available on the market by December 2004.  More>>

Feb 2004: Technology Enabled Clothing (TEC) teams up with Canada's ICP Solar Technologies to develop solar powered jackets that can enable wearers to carry, connect and charge their portable digital devices.  More>>

Nov 2003: $3 million is the amount invested in Combat Casualty Care by the US government in research on electronic textiles for military applications. The grant is used to develop and design electronic textiles that can monitor and transmit wearers' pulse, blood pressure, temperature and location back to medics and a central unit.  More>>
